The history of NASA in a painting
The History of NASA in a Painting
“The entire history of NASA is in your painting,” Gene Kranz said after studying it for ten minutes. Coming from one of my heroes, this was the highest compliment I’ve ever received. This painting reflects NASA's storied history and intertwines with my own artistic journey. I began drawing at age four and became a professional illustrator at 18. Over the years, I worked my way to top positions at newspapers and magazines. Later, I co-founded a business, creating learning maps, before establishing myself as a portrait artist. This path brought me full circle, as I had painted more than 20 significant works for the Pentagon and the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.
Why Ohio Matters to NASA
Ohio has a rich legacy of astronauts who shaped NASA’s history. This painting honors that connection. Early Beginnings in Hicksville My passion for art began in Hicksville, where I discovered my love for drawing. That early interest shaped the course of my life.
Milestones Along the Way
Notable moments in my career include painting for the “100th Year of Flight” celebration in 2003, where I collaborated with aviation artist Harley Copic—my best friend. While he painted the airplanes, I captured the people, showcasing our combined dedication to preserving aviation history. From Illustration to Fine Art.
As the demand for illustration waned, I transitioned to gallery painting, portraits, and fine art. Like many illustrators before me, I embraced this shift, which ultimately led to creating this painting—a culmination of decades of experience.
This project is the pinnacle of my 50-year career as an artist, solidifying my reputation.
I hope this painting inspires others, just as Ohio’s astronauts have inspired me.
