How best to commission a valuable custom portrait

Know Yourself: A Guide to Commissioning Portraits

William Dean Hinsch · March 23, 2020 · Advice for art lovers.

I often hear people worry about commissioning a portrait because of concerns over the process or outcome. From my perspective as an experienced portrait artist, I want to assure you that commissioning a portrait can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for both the collector and the artist. It’s all about communication, clarity, and collaboration.

Here’s my advice for commissioning a portrait that will be cherished for generations:

Be Honest About Your Vision

When you approach an artist to commission a portrait, take the time to clearly define what you’re looking for. Is it a formal portrait of a loved one? A more casual depiction? What size and style do you have in mind? Share examples of the artist’s work you admire. This will help ensure that your vision aligns with their strengths.

For me, the best commissions come when clients are excited about the process and understand what I bring to the table. If you’re uncertain about what you want, that’s okay. Part of my job is to help guide you and refine your vision through conversation and planning.

Understand the Process

Here’s how I typically work with clients:

Initial Conversation

We discuss your vision, budget, and timeline. If the subject is a child or someone unfamiliar with being painted, I find ways to make them comfortable. Sometimes, this involves sharing my creative process or showing examples of how portraits come to life.

Setting Terms

Once we’ve agreed on the scope, I outline the process in a detailed contract. This includes pricing, timelines, and what’s included—like framing, travel, or shipping. I require a 50% deposit to hold the spot on my calendar and cover initial expenses. This deposit is non-refundable.

Preliminary Sketch and Revisions

Before starting the actual painting, I create a preliminary sketch or digital mock-up for your approval. This ensures we’re aligned on the composition and details. At this stage, you can request changes, and those changes are built into the agreed-upon price.

Final Painting

Once the preliminary design is approved, I move forward with the painting. To protect the integrity of my process, I don’t offer ongoing updates or changes once the painting is in progress. When it’s complete, you’ll have the opportunity to either accept or reject it. If it’s accepted, the final 50% payment is due. If it’s not, I retain the painting, and you owe nothing further.

Protect Your Investment

A commissioned portrait is a significant investment, so it’s essential to work with an artist whose style and professionalism you trust. My approach is designed to give you confidence in the process. I want the portrait to be something you and your family treasure for years to come.

If you have budget constraints, be upfront. I offer a range of options, from monochromatic studies to fully realized oil portraits, and even payment plans for larger works. By discussing these details early, we can find a solution that works for both of us.

Embrace Collaboration

The best portraits come from a true collaboration between the artist and the collector. Your input and enthusiasm inspire me to create a piece that captures the essence of the subject. At the same time, it’s important to trust the artist’s expertise and give them creative freedom within the agreed-upon terms.

Know Your Boundaries

As an artist, I’ve learned to take on only the projects that align with my abilities and interests. If you’re considering a commission, make sure you’re comfortable with the artist’s process and style. A good match ensures the final result will exceed your expectations.

Concluding thoughts

Commissioning a portrait can be a deeply rewarding experience. By being honest about your vision, understanding the process, and collaborating with your artist, you’ll set the stage for a portrait that becomes a cherished heirloom. If you’re ready to start this journey, I’d love to discuss your ideas and help bring them to life.
